Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a debilitating genetic disorder that primarily affects children, causing progressive muscle weakness and disability. DMD almost always affects boys. It is typically diagnosed in childhood between the age of three to six. SEVA Trust UK has been working with the Children suffering from DMD in North India. We have identified over 1000 children suffering from DMD & Muscular Dystrophy in the North India. We provided ayurvedic medicines to some children free of cost and are supporting their nutrition and hygiene support. It is important to provide proper support to such children and their families so SEVA Trust UK wants to increase its activities in this area.
Stages of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD)
DMD is characterized by a predictable progression of symptoms and stages, typically divided into the following phases:
Delay in the ability to sit and stand independently
Initial signs of muscle weakness, including difficulty standing and walking.
Frequent falls and delayed motor development.
Elevated levels of serum creatine kinase (CK) in blood tests.
Early interventions such as physical therapy may begin.
Progressive muscle weakness becomes more pronounced.
Difficulty climbing stairs and getting up from the floor.
Introduction of assistive devices like orthopedic braces to maintain mobility.
Loss of ambulation as leg muscles weaken further.
Cardiac complications, including cardiomyopathy, may develop and require monitoring.
Ventilatory support may become necessary due to respiratory muscle weakness.
Focus on maintaining quality of life through mobility aids and supportive care.
Continued muscle weakness, particularly in upper limbs.
Progressive heart and respiratory issues, necessitating ongoing medical attention.
